After waiting not so patiently for flood waters to subside, a small group of my friends and I floated down a short section of the Samish River last week. The Samish is a beautiful river in Skagit County, Washington. It's been listed on the Department of Ecology's list of polluted waters for decades, and a large cleanup effort is underway by Skagit County and other agencies.
This trip is not recommended for timid paddlers...there were LOTS of logjams. We spent more time dragging the boats around the jams than we did paddling. None the less, a good time was had by all. We especially enjoyed looking at the places where the recent floodwaters had scoured the river banks. We took opportunities to rest in quiet side channels, above.
